Dentures

Dentures are replacements for the teeth that are lost for various reasons and meet the aesthetic and functional needs of the patients.

In general, tooth loss may occur as a result of failure to properly treat gum diseases. In addition, tooth loss may occur as a result of some accidents. For this reason, missing teeth should be replaced by dentures that will serve the same function as healthy teeth in terms of functionality and aesthetics.

Fixed Dentures

Fixed dentures are the types of dentures applied by making the teeth smaller and bonding artificial teeth on them. This type of dentures can be applied on a single tooth in the mouth, or as a dental bridge by reducing the adjacent teeth and connecting them in case of one or more missing teeth. They can also be applied on dental implants.

Dentures are applied in the following cases:

  • In cases where an aesthetic intervention is required
  • Missing teeth
  • Excessive tooth damage
  • Discolouration of teeth
  • Gapped and crooked teeth

There are several types of dentures according to the way of application:

  1. Metal-supported dental bridges:
They are bridges where metal materials are used under porcelain veneers in order to increase the resistance of the porcelain teeth.
  2. Metal-free dental crowns/bridges:
They are dental crowns and bridges applied mostly for aesthetic purposes. They are preferred only in anterior group teeth due to their low resistance to pressure.
  3. Zirconium dental crowns and bridges:
They are applied mostly for aesthetic purposes. In the substructure, a material called Zirconium is used instead of metal. Zirconium is a tooth-coloured, pressure-resistant material. For this purpose, it can be easily used in posterior group teeth where an aesthetic appearance is desired.

Removable Dentures

Removable dentures, better known as false teeth, are types of dentures that can be worn and removed by people. They are divided into two types: removable partial and complete dentures.

Removable partial dentures are the types of dentures that are generally applied in cases of non-existence of posterior teeth that can be used as a connection or in cases where a wide area in the mouth is edentulous and in cases of failure to apply fixed dentures. This type of dentures are supported by the teeth in the mouth either by means of retainers or appliances called precision attachment.

Removable complete dentures are dentures applied in edentulous patients. Removable dentures, whether partial or complete dentures, are generally not comfortable for use.
